Hampshire came around in the year 1835, but it was not named Hampshire back in those days. The area known as Rutland, which formed part of Deerfield was basically where modern day Hampshire stands today. Elijah Rich and his son along with Thomas and Eviline Starks were among the first settlers of what would later become known as Hampshire. They had encountered the local Indians in the area, but the Pottawatomie Indians gave them no trouble. Settlement was difficult back in the pioneer days. Log cabins were built by hand. Tedious and tiring, people worked hard to construct a home that would allow enough warm in the winter and enough cooling in the summer to keep it somewhat habitable, but life was tough indeed.
